ABSTRACT
This chapter exhibits the thoroughly pragmatic character of Confucian scholarship in historical context by describing hermeneutic debates over the Mencius by Sung (960-1279) Confucian scholars. Scholarly debates over Confucianism eo ipso are political wranglings over legitimization of a political institution or of a policy decision and its implementation. This phenomenon is rarely seen elsewhere in the world.
