ABSTRACT

The tenth anniversary of the removal of the Berlin Wall is a welcome opportunity not only to examine the historical significance of the fall of Soviet communism but also to reflect on Western views of communist systems. This chapter focuses on the views and judgements of those who most readily made them known and available: prominent intellectuals, including academics, writers, influential journalists, opinion makers, some scientists and clergymen. While focusing on the specifics of the perceptions and judgements of communist systems, the chapter seeks to explain some of the patterns and trends in these perceptions — especially those which were grossly distorted. The misjudgements and misperceptions provide an opportunity to learn more about human nature, including human needs, goals and defining weaknesses. The erroneous views and misjudgements of communist systems encompassed explanations of their origin, key characteristics as well as the anticipations of their durability.
