ABSTRACT

A separatist multicultural society will invoke racial, cultural, and religious prejudices and stereotypes on both sides of the cultural divide. Human nature creates and perpetuates stereotypes and caricatures, and harbours prejudice, often as a substitute for actual knowledge. Prejudice suggests intolerance and is considered to be a moral transgression if it is translated into discrimination. Prejudice is a pre-judgement, and not a considered view, which differs from its pejorative and incorrect interpretation. Trust, better communication, and reciprocal toleration can serve to counteract prejudice and stereotyping between racial/cultural groups. Victimhood can be claimed by most minorities—ethnic minorities, smokers, cyclists, animal right activists, environmentalists, fox hunters, the British National Party. Victimhood is often accompanied by an assertive accusation of prejudice and/or discrimination, usually racial, gender or both. Victimhood, often self-designated, invites people to "aspect focus" in presenting an image that supposedly shows the whole story.
