ABSTRACT

Racial intolerance is a latent feature and a potential cause of conflict, particularly in a multiracial/cultural society. Although cosmopolitans might wish to dismiss it, racial intolerance remains subliminally latent in human nature—and if this is so, it cannot be easily legislated or socially engineered away. Reverse racism and reverse intolerance may be understandable reactions and/or compensation for white racism, perceived or otherwise, because intolerance begets reverse intolerance and can become politicized. One psychologist denies the existence of reverse racism: "But whatever black people may do in the way of a racist response, there is no such thing as black racism. Racism and reverse racism are counter-productive—an attack on the pride, culture or history of any nation or race will produce resentment. It is a feature of reverse racism to deny the mainstream society a sense of national pride and history, and to promote a "cultural cringe'—a climate of guilt and shame about the nation's past.
