ABSTRACT

This chapter explains why P&G, a huge company with a conservative, almost stuffy image, is the major sponsor of two of the more atrocious TV talk shows, the Jenny Jones Show and The Ricki Lake Show. John E. Pepper, CEO and chairman of Procter & Gamble is active in charitable affairs and youth work, and so straight-laced that one colleague said he could have been a priest. He has been called "the soul and conscience of P&G" for so often that some at the company call him "Jiminy Pepper," a reference to the famed moral scourge, Jiminy Cricket. On the other hand, he presides over a company whose ad dollars are certainly doing a great deal to prop up the stupid TV freak shows built around "I impregnated 30 girls, and I'm proud of it," and "I slept with my mother's boyfriend and his transvestite bookie and came down with herpes, so I gave it to my cousin.".
