ABSTRACT

The Los Angeles Times has a problem with the Promise Keepers, the Christian men's movement. It suggests that by waiving admission fees to rallies for some minority men, "the organization is trying to engineer diversity that is not happening naturally." Wow. The Promise Keepers' commitment to racial reconciliation irritates the Village Voice too. A newspaper which has never met a quota it didn't like is lecturing religious people about the evils of engineering diversity. A Voice article attacked "the sanitized multiculturalism" of the movement and called its "policy of racial diversity so overt that it reeks of insincerity." The same sort of double standard is showing up in the current crusade against the Promise Keepers by the National Organization for Women. The Promise Keepers appear to be a response to the alienation of men from the Evangelical churches, and the physical or emotional absence of men from their families.
