ABSTRACT

John Concordia got in trouble with his teacher for bringing a hamburger to class. He's in high school in Los Angeles, and he was told to bring a favorite family dish to school. So he brought a hamburger, apparently because his family likes burgers. John's parents are Filipino immigrants so their favorite food should have been some tasty and authentic Filipino dish. Older and wiser veterans of diversity training could have told John the correct answer to the food-choice question. It's a rock-bottom idea among the diversity people that people who check off "American" are in denial about their own tribal identity. One of the reasons that freshmen arrive at college that way is that high school teachers, like John Concordia's, work so hard to keep ethnic and other tribal divisions sharp. Brown University has a separate freshman orientation program for non-white students. This reduces the danger that freshmen of Asian, Hispanic, and African heritage will bond with white classmates.
