ABSTRACT

Larry Flynt had a big week in Washington. He was the guest of John F. Kennedy, Jr., at the White House Correspondents dinner and he delivered a lecture at Georgetown University. But Flynt's invitation from Kennedy, president and editor in chief of George magazine, was too much for columnist Michael Kelly. He reminded readers that Flynt had tried to short-circuit the impeachment process with "a loathsome campaign of sexual blackmail" against congressional Republicans. Kelly noted that Flynt's porno magazine, Hustler, is renowned for its racism and its degradation of women, while one of Flynt's daughters accused him of sexually abusing her. Allison Tepley, an official of the student lecture fund, defended the Flynt invitation on grounds that it would provoke dialogue and intellectual debate. Flynt's 30-year career is enough to make most Americans throw up in unison, but Tepley could not make a value judgment yet.
