ABSTRACT

Psychoanalytic liberals have a lot to answer for. Out of a spirit of tolerance, combined with an understandable distaste for controversy, they have neglected to monitor books on the history of psychoanalysis. And therefore academic authors eager to please the established powers-that-be in orthodox psychoanalysis have felt free to puruse their zealous cause without fear of reprisal from reviewers. Historiographic atrocities have been licensed not just by the encouragement of the defenders of “classical” analysis but by the reviewing silence of the free-thinkers within the field.
