ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a quotation from a speech by the well-known naturalist Haeckel and shows how the process of the gradual differentiation of the world is now perceived. It argues that in the organic world the law of differentiation can be traced throughout the development of every separate individual, beginning with the moment of the fertilization of the egg. All other manifestations of the collective are likewise subject to the law of differentiation. As a matter of fact, this law can quite clearly be traced in the development of language. Even the acquisition of skills and knowledge is subject to the law of differentiation. The law of differentiation in social life encompasses the division of labor and, in general, the gradual separation of a primarily simple and homogeneous collective into various parts in the form of separate circles, parties, and likewise in any manifestation of individualism in society.
