ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case narratives of ten adoptive families. Although some of the respondents report that they have experienced or continue to experience challenges and stress, they tend to make closing comments that are more positive than negative in outlook. The chapter consist of the parents, eight couples and two single adopters. Collectively, these respondents adopted a total of sixteen children. Just over two thirds of the adoptees are boys. At their adoptions, the children ranged in age from seven months old to seven years old. The modal age of these children at adoption was five years old. Yet, the large majority of them received no preadaptation preparation at all and four others state that they received “very little” or a “small amount” of prior preparation. The general sentiment of these parents is that they did not receive either accurate or complete information about the child or children they adopted.
