ABSTRACT

Children are growing up in a world rich in digital technology, with high-speed access to global information as an expectation. Museum educators are equally thoughtful and concerned about the role of technology in programming, particularly for younger visitors. Technology is a topic deeply woven into the historical fabric of almost every country, and in many cases, is a catalyst for significant change in society. Museum professionals are well aware of emerging technologies, as evidenced by the integration of videos, games, and social media into exhibitions and other gallery spaces, as well as efforts to reach the public through web-based initiatives. Anecdotal evidence from the informal survey of educators provides examples of museum practice that merge technology with object-based experience. Museums see technology as part of daily practice and advertise the broad range of opportunities for visitors to be inspired by art, artifacts, scientific specimens, and experiences that include digital encounters.
