ABSTRACT

Graduating from the painful formality of a Ph.D. program was like being released from prison. I breathed deeply as I moved into my new free life as an adjunct lecturer at Brooklyn College. My students were mostly smiling and energetic, and since I had not known the campus before its change to an Open Admissions environment, I had no investment in doing things the traditional way. In my classroom, I could stop tiptoeing around the world of erudition and be my young self again.
