ABSTRACT
Before the coming of the white man, all the heavier garden work at Sa’a and Ulawa was done with axes of flint or stone. The larger trees were ring-barked or killed by fires lighted round their base. The smaller trees were chopped high up, or were killed and left to serve as poles for the yam vines. A shell was used to cut creepers. No metals were worked or known.
