ABSTRACT

This chapter simplifies the definitions, concepts, and core strategies so that they are clear and actionable for healthcare professionals. Information governance (IG) strategy must align with overall organizational strategy to support the accomplishment of business objectives. For IG programs to deliver consistent, long-term benefits, they must become as embedded as a workplace safety program. Unstructured information is more challenging to manage than structured information in databases and is the primary focus of many IG programs. IG programs across industries are often aimed at reducing legal costs and information risk. The components of IG are coming into clearer focus as the discipline matures. IG professionals were surveyed, and the results show a market that is maturing and coming into focus. Consensus has been building as to IG's identity, and the market is solidifying. IG must be driven from the top down by a strong executive sponsor.
