ABSTRACT

Image segmentation is the process of dividing an image according to certain criteria into various homogenous regions. In order to be meaningful and useful for image analysis and interpretation, the regions should strongly relate to depicted objects or features of interest. An accurate segmentation is the first and very important step from low-level image processing, transforming an image into one or more parts, to high-level image description, in terms of image features or objects. Segmentation is a very challenging task because the success of image analysis depends on the accuracy of the segmentation. This chapter introduces the concept of image segmentation and various techniques used to perform image segmentation are described.
