ABSTRACT

To understand an image via a machine, it is required to represent the image in a machine-understandable form. A region of an image can be described using the external representation or internal representation. The external representation of a region uses its shape characteristics, while the internal representation uses regional properties. Description of an object is a complex task and accuracy of further processing depends on the way of describing the objects in the image. A number of techniques for both internal and external representations are available. The selection of a technique depends on the application. In this chapter, various image representations and description techniques are discussed that can be used for the understanding of an image. In order to identify an object, pattern recognition is done. A number of techniques are available for pattern recognition. This chapter provides an overview of some common pattern recognition approaches.
