ABSTRACT

It is evident from all the chapters presented here that a great deal is already known about RNA processing even though it is a relatively young field of research. However, it is also obvious that much more is still missing. In general it is clear that much of the phenomenology is well defined, but very little of it is clearly understood. This is particularly true in eukaryotic cells. Moreover, about one of the more enigmatic phenomena, the prevalence of intervening sequences in so many of the genes of higher eukaryotic cells, it is not even clear whether good speculations about its raison d’etre are available.
