ABSTRACT

In this chapter the role of earlier socialization in the development of beliefs about emotions is discussed. For example, when the client as a child was upset, to whom would she go with these feelings? How did mother and father and others respond? Which emotions were viewed as unacceptable in the family? Were parents dismissive, minimizing, contemptuous or validating? Was the child humiliated or supported? How do others in the current emotional environment respond to the client’s emotions? What beliefs about emotion arose out of these experiences?
