ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the impact of emotions on the relationships between parent and teenager. It discusses the emotions of parents, but people should not ignore the fact that the emotions of teenagers also play a part in the overall picture. The chapter looks at emotions such as frustration and irritation, as well as sadness, guilt, and loss. It also discusses how best to manage strong feelings between parents and teenagers. Many parents worry about the strength of their feelings, whether these are anger, anxiety, shame, or guilt. Many believe that, in some way, it is their fault that they have such powerful emotions. Some teenagers remain close to their parents, even though they gradually acquire greater independence. Among the various emotions that are experienced during the teenage years, a sense of loss is one that almost all parents experience at one time or another.
