ABSTRACT

This chapter will be structured as an introduction both to ESG investing terminology, and a definition of the scope of this book. As ESG investing is notorious for vague terminology and undefined nomenclature, this chapter will attempt to bring clarity by defining the scope of the textbook and the assumptions regarding terminology that the authors have made. As for scope, this textbook will be useful for European and North American programs teaching on ESG investing, with a tilt towards North American terminology. This is due to vocabularic differences between North American and European investors when it comes to ESG investing. This will include the decision, made based on a wide range of qualitative sources, that Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing will be the overarching term under which impact investing, socially responsible investing (SRI), responsible investing (RI) will exist. This decision reflects current trends in North American vocabulary regarding this investment strategy. This chapter will also discuss practical uses of the textbook, and include brief mentions of useful features for students.
