ABSTRACT

‘Reasons and arguments’ takes a critical look at arguments for atheism. It assesses various contentions, including: (1) atheism is the default position; (2) the claim that there are gods is meaningless; (3) the claim that there are gods is logically self-defeating; (4) the claim that there are gods is logically inconsistent with other things that we know to be true; (5) the claim that there are gods is massively unlikely given other things that we know to be true; and (6) theories that include the claim that there are no gods are overall better than theories that include the claim that there are gods. The conclusion of this discussion is that it is ultimately a matter for judgment whether there are no gods; thoughtful, reflective, intelligent, well-informed people can reasonably agree to disagree about this matter.
