ABSTRACT

Over the course of several decades, researchers in a variety of disciplines have drawn attention to the human and organizational costs of bullying and other forms of aggressive workplace communication. These perspectives have been useful in advancing awareness and knowledge. However, workplace bullying is, at its heart, a communicative phenomenon. Hence, communicative perspectives are vital to revealing the complex and nuanced character and dynamics of this phenomenon. In this chapter, I survey the contributions that Communication scholars have made to our understanding of workplace bullying, the development of communication-based strategies to address it, and to elucidate the future of Communication scholarship. This chapter ultimately aims to situate Communication scholars more centrally in the ongoing conversation surrounding workplace bullying.
