ABSTRACT

Some people think of themselves as rational, thoughtful and able to make good judgements in most situations. A cognitive bias is an error in thinking which happens in a reasonably common and predictable way. These cognitive biases are thought to act automatically and also to be very hard to prevent. This list of cognitive biases only scratches the surface of the array of systematic errors that affect the ways we think. One further reason the idea of being a motivated tactician is important is because it highlights the important influence of motivation on social-cognitive processes. One very influential way of understanding self-control is via the idea of ego depletion. Ego-depletion theories suggest that self-control is like a muscle which can be depleted, but it is also one that can be trained. Ego-depletion research suggest that if we exercise self-control in one domain, we may be less able to control our subsequent eating.
