ABSTRACT

Networks are ubiquitous and permeate many aspects of human endeavor. Advancing technologies driven by the digital five forces of mobility and pervasive computing, big data and analytics, social media, Cloud Computing, and Artificial Intelligence and robotics are extending the reach of networks while simultaneously accelerating their real-time capabilities. The “digital network business model” is a direct result of the convergence of these technologies and is growing rapidly and providing excellent value. Emerging technologies enable users to acquire and disseminate information through extensive networks on web based and mobile platforms. Such opportunities are accompanied by challenges such as security and failure prevention. In this chapter, we discuss how fail-safe designs can be implemented to fully harness these networks while minimizing or eliminating the risks involved in their use. Further, we argue that the framework and techniques in this monograph are applicable beyond the supply chain domain for architecting fail safe networks in other industries. Finally, we discuss the implications in selected areas such as manufacturing and power networks.
