ABSTRACT

The elderly are losing their importance to society. The elderly are thus being pushed to the sidelines; many of them feel unimportant and superfluous, and they are becoming isolated. The elderly present their artistic testaments to members of the younger generation. In the past decades, authors has developed and initiated a project called 'Hidden Legacy'. It aims to use forms of art to help the elderly create a visual testament of this immaterial legacy for younger generations, and in doing so, to raise awareness of the value of elderly people as sustainable, cultural capital. 'Hidden Legacy' started with two general target groups: elderly people above the age of 65 and members of the younger generation who are at an age where they are finishing school and beginning their adult lives. During the process of 'Hidden Legacy', the elderly make their immaterial testaments in three steps. Three steps are: Ritual games; the artistic testament; Presentation to the community.
