ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of Olivia and Maria. Olivia is a four-year-old female child whose mother, Angelica, is an undocumented immigrant from Latin America and suffers from depression and traumatic stress. Olivia becomes hyper-aroused, hitting and snatching the other children's toys. Maria has noticed that Olivia is often upset and frequently hides in the corner when it is time to leave for the day. Maria is working with the Head Start family advocate and Olivia's mother to help the mother understand that Olivia's behaviors are a reaction to the loss of the father. They are also discussing with the mother that Olivia is being observed in the classroom by a mental health consultant who is helping Maria support Olivia in the classroom and recommending strategies that the mother can use at home with Olivia. The coach can support Olivia's teacher, Maria, by working with her to create a self-care plan.
