ABSTRACT

This chapter considers that a child born today may live to see the year 2100, "21st century learning" seems downright inadequate as the blueprint to prepare students. The relationships among the Commons illustrate the next concept: interdependence. Our well-being depends on healthy relationships between ecological and social systems. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations defined food security as "all people, at all times, having physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life". One factor (in the United States) is access to healthy and affordable foods. Full-service grocery stores are less prevalent in low-income communities, where residents are more reliant upon on "junk food" from gas stations or convenience stores. The quality and quantity of food and water is affected by climate change, a prominent international concern that knows no boundaries.
