ABSTRACT

Beni Haroun and Porce II dams are two of the biggest RCC dams recently built. Beni Haroun is 118 m high and reaches a dam volume of 1,9000.000 cubic meters, 1,600.000 of them are RCC. Porce II is 123 m high above foundation and its dam body volume amount to 1,450.000 cubic meters, 1,300.000 of them are RCC. Both dams were built using the high paste content RCC technique being their standard quality requirements quite alike. Nevertheless the technologies used have been quite different not only in manufacturing, transporting and placing the concrete but also in designing and carrying out several construction details. The different technologies range from the aggregates manufacture and cooling system to the concrete distribution and pouring, and from the joints sealing system to the face finish. All these differences are going to be described and compared and its pros and cons, related to construction and performance, highlighted. Our outlook on these matters will be also produced.
