ABSTRACT

This chapter explains review of various industries relating to powder handling processes. There are many types of industries where powder is produced by chemical reactions or handled as raw or intermediate materials. Operations in powder handling processes are classified into two categories. One is mechanical, such as size reduction of raw materials, filtration and separation of fine particles, size classification, powder mixing, and granulation. The second, based on heat and mass transfer, includes drying, crystallization, and extraction. In the powder metallurgical industries, there are also important powder handling operations, such as size reduction, size classification, powder mixing, plastic treatment of powder, and calcination. The quality of metallurgical products depends greatly on the amount of impurities and additives, the mean particle size, and the size distribution of pulverized raw materials. Powder contains very many particles of different sizes. The size distribution of particles represents one of the most important physical properties of powder.
