ABSTRACT

Componentware promises to enhance an organization’s ability to build robust systems quickly through the use of reusable prebuilt software components. Properly leveraged, components can provide the foundation upon which organizations meet and exceed the demands of a global marketplace that increasingly uses technology as a primary competitive advantage. Four major drivers are contributing to the trend toward component-based systems development: a crisis in software engineering, the continued evolution of object-oriented (OO) technology, entry into the market by major industry players, and a burgeoning marketplace for components. Many organizations have found that a long-term commitment to OO has resulted in significant leaps in productivity as well as more robust applications that are easily modified to react to changes in the marketplace. With componentware, individuals with OO skills can be focused on the task of designing and building the components themselves.
