To GRASP the nature of Webers intellectual creativity one must keep in mind some such metaphor as the archaeological one that Freud used, with some reservations, in Civilization and Its Discontents. There the metaphor served to illuminate the various layers of buried memories, consciousness, and perception in the human mind. Similarly, I would suggest that we can best comprehend Weber's work of 1892-5 on the land question if we think of it in terms of three congruent realms of consciousness, partly buried and partly open, super imposed on a fourth realm, quite hidden, whose existence we know only by inference from the contours of the realms above and by documents that we find elsewhere.
