ABSTRACT

The Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial was organized in 1919 and in 1929 merged with the Rockefeller Foundation. The technique of educational research has been immeasurably advanced in recent years, and several foundations have found ways to apply the new techniques. Another favorite form for foundation activity is the study of professional education in different fields. This chapter discusses the largest single body of coordinated foundation activity. Mental hygiene, having become a repository of new knowledge and a subject of active institutional and community interest, has offered opportunity to a number of foundations, notably the Laura Spelman Memorial and the Commonwealth. The Rockefeller Foundation has also distributed nearly seventy millions for medical education, chiefly in foreign countries. Sometimes a foundation sees an opportunity to perform a useful local purpose and at the same time to advance a new profession.
