ABSTRACT

A foundation must be willing to take the initiative; it must show courage as well as prudence; it must realize that the value of individual enterprises can't always be measured by general formulas. As a social instrument the mobility of the foundation gives it certain very definite assets, of which it should take full advantage. The foundation should be alert to seek out and to enter new fields where help is needed, provided its resources are sufficient either to make a substantial immediate contribution, or to continue its help long enough to achieve a cumulative effect. The opportunities open to foundations will be constantly changing, both as to fields of activity and as to methods of operation. The foundation has shared the limitations of all human organizations, whether they be religious or political or social, and is no more entitled than any of the others to self-satisfaction.
