ABSTRACT

At various points in the preceding pages we have suggested that urban society has brought about specialization and functional interdependence. Whereas formerly men carried on highly similar occupational lives, with urbanization their work has become differentiated, some doing one kind of job, others doing another. Tasks have .also been specialized by organization for the performance of services and the production of goods the society wants. The organizations thus developed threaten in one way or another the relationships that have traditionally revolved around the localities where people live.
