ABSTRACT
As the scale of the society increases, the small community, tribe or village or neighborhood, comes to depend more on the larger system of order. T h e loss of autonomy for the local group is often compensated by increasing wealth, power, and security. But there are real costs, and among the most important is the erosion of the existing culture-the belief system and the normative structure that have given life meaning.
