ABSTRACT

The evolving role of the clinical psychologist in the United States has come to include the practice of psychotherapy. The development of adequate training programs for clinical psychologists by the universities and by the practicum agencies was greatly facilitated by the creation of the Evaluation and Training Board of the American Psychological Association. Another factor which has worked toward increasing the diversity in psychotherapy training of clinical psychologists is the trend toward the development of specialty training programs at the postdoctoral level. A one-third random sample of the 1959 membership of Division 12 of APA was surveyed by mail questionnaire concerning their psychotherapy training and activities. Seventy-eight percent of the respondents were residing in the following 13 states which are listed in descending order of frequency: New York, California, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Texas, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Kansas and Connecticut.
