ABSTRACT

The Democratic Party is fond of saying that the United States is intended to be an agricultural country. The Niagara basin, the Mississippi valley, and the South, will be able to furnish the trading world with agricultural products for ever. But it is clear that there are other parts of the country which must have recourse to manufactures and commerce. The people of the United States choose to be proprietors of land, not tenants. No one can yet foresee the time when the relation of landlord and tenant (except in regard to house property) will be extensively established in America. The expedients used in the country settlements to secure a combination of labour when it is absolutely necessary, show how eminently deficient it is. Every one has heard of the "frolic" or "bee", by means of which the clearing of lots, the raising of houses, the harvesting of crops are achieved.
