ABSTRACT

My purpose in this paper is to present questions about the nature of life and evolution which can still generate deep curiosity among physicists in spite of the assurances of molecular biologists that the physical basis of life is now clearly understood. I have learned that this is not a popular purpose, to say the least; for these days to admit uncertainty about the basic nature of heredity, enzymes, or evolution is often regarded only as evidence that you have lost contact with modern biological knowledge.
