W e h a v e s h o w n p r e v i o u s l y t h a t r a c i a l s e g r e g a t i o n d o e s n o t d e p e n d o n l y o n t h e l o w e r e c o n o m i c s t a t u s o f N e g r o e s , a n d t h a t i t i s m o r e p r o n o u n c e d t h a n s e g r e g a t i o n a l o n g c l a s s o r e t h n i c l i n e s . T h u s , w e a r e f a c e d w i t h ac o m p l e x s e t o f r e l a t i o n s h i p s b e t w e e n r a c i a l d i f f e r e n t i a t i o n a n d s o c i o e c o n o m i c d i f f e r e n t i a t i o n o f u r b a n a r e a s . O n o n e h a n d , r a c i a l d i f f e r e n t i a t i o n a p p e a r s t o b e i n f l u e n c e d b y s o c i o - e c o n o m i c d i f f e r e n t i a t i o n , b u t o n t h e o t h e r , s o c i o e c o n o m i c f a c t o r s a l o n e a r e n o t s u f f i c i e n t t o a c c o u n t f o r r a c i a l d i f f e r e n t i a t i o n .
