ABSTRACT
Punishment can be justified solely on moralistic grounds as retribution, inflicting suffering on the wicked because i t is right to do so. And for many people, this and similar justifications may indeed be their only important reason for favoring the punishment of criminals. For others, however, other justifications are crucial.
