ABSTRACT

When the people of one cultural group meet with those of another, each will bring to the relationship a number of attitudes and expectations, habits and values which are already established. As the relationship between these individuals develops some of these elements change and the behaviour which finally results will depend just as much on the context of the relationship (the situation) as on all these predispositions. The chapters by Katz and Watson, in this book, deal primarily with the effects of the situation on the interpersonal relationship, and so this chapter will deal mainly with the effects of these more 'internal' factors.
