Intheprecedingchapterswedefinedpurposefulsystemsandconstructed asetofmeasuresofpurposefulness.Wehave,however,takenforgranted thoseprocessesthatareprerequisiteforpurposefulbehavior.Thusthe familiarity,knowledge,andintentionsthatcharacterizeapurposefulsystem inagivenenvironmentandaffectitschoicebehaviorpresupposecertain inputsfromthatenvironmentandpreviousexperience.Theseareobtained throughp e r c e p t i o n andc o n s c i o u s n e s s ofthatenvironmentandself,and usuallysomem e m o r y ofprevioussituations.Thustheresearcherneedsto knowofanindividualpurposefulsystemnotonlyitscharacteristicresponses (familiarity),itsknowledgeandunderstanding,anditsintentions,butalso whetherandhowthesearelikelytocomeintoplayinagivenkindofsituation.
