ABSTRACT

The definition of c o m m u n i c a t i o n given in Chapter 9 used the concept m e s s a g e , which is as yet undefined. Since a message consists of one or more signs, it is first necessary to define sign. This chapter includes that definition and also develops a set of measures to characterize sign performance. Using these concepts, m e s s a g e and l a n g u a g e are then defined.
