ABSTRACT
The National Health Service Act provided the framework of a new organi zation which would come into operation on an "appointed day," which was later disclosed as July 5, 1948. In the meantime, decisive negotiations were to take place between the Ministry of Health and the medical profession. The regulations agreed on in this period, and the concessions obtained, gave substance to the Act. They ensured its final acceptance by medical practi tioners and provided new machinery for representing consultant interests.
