ABSTRACT
The former president of the University of Minnesota, Nils Hasselmo, became the president of the Association of American Universities in July of 1998. Founded in 1900 by fourteen Ph.D.-granting institutions, the AAU is currently comprised of sixty-two public and private universities (sixty in the U.S. and two in Canada) distinguished by their research accomplishments and their strong graduate and professional programs.
