Law,likesocialwork,beginswhensomeonetakestodoing somethingsomeoneelsedoesn'tlike.Onewayofattackingthis problemofhumanconductisbycenteringontheindividual whoseconductismakingtrouble.Thatgivesuscasework,and, withluck,individualcures.Thatmethodofattacktakesthesocial systemforgranted.Thejobistogettheindividualadjustedto thesystem.Differentinmatter,method,andaimistheattackby wayofstudyofthesystemtoseewhatitisandhowitworks.This is,tobesure,ofservicelaterinundertakingindividualcures;but itis,withluck,ofserviceevenmoreinopeningupachanceof modifyingthesystemandofreducingtheneedforcures.This papermovesalongthesecondline:thatofstudyofthesystem,of massandnotofindividualeffects.
