ABSTRACT
Mrs Machin, wife of a foundry worker and the mother of four children, gave us an exceptionally candid and revealing account:
'They've all of them bin a surprise-I never wanted none of them, and specially this last one. And I don't mind admitting, I've taken pills and pills, but I never got shut of none of 'em yet. Now with Janice-1 was two months with her, and then I made a show, and I went to the doctor and she said "I'm afraid you've had a miscarriage" -course, I didn't tell her I'd been taking pills! But then I didn't have one again, so I goes back to the doctor, and she examines me, and she says "Well, it's still there, you're lucky!" Oh dear! (laughed). But once I knew she was a girl, I was glad I'd got her. But I don't want no more.'l Mrs Lievesley, an engine-driver's wife, had five children. She had 'had to get married' nineteen years ago, and she hadn't wanted this baby either.
