ABSTRACT

Over the past quarter-century, the religious component of world politics has captured increasing attention. The Iranian revolution has highlighted a resurgence of a militant Islamic traditionalism in countries as diverse as Nigeria, Pakistan, and Indonesia; violence between Hindus, Moslems, and Sikhs threaten to tear India apart; Catholicism is both a troubled and troubling force in Latin America and Eastern Europe. But what of the United States, a nation that claims to be founded in the name of religious freedom and indeed may be the most religiously pluralistic country on earth?
