THERELATIONSHIPBETWEENtheartsandanthropologyisaproblemwhichhasbeendiscussedfromtimetotime,butunfortunatelyusuallywithoutmuchresult.Whileanthropologistshave longbeeninterestedinthearts,particularlyamongnonliterate peoples,itisonlyrecentlythatsignificantstudieshavebegun toappear.HertaHaselberger(1961:342)tellsusthat"specimensofethnologicalarthadbeenincludedinEuropeancollectionsasearlyasthefifteenthcentury,"andreferencestoAfrican musicextendwellbackintotheseventeenthcentury(Dapper 1676)0Indance,thestudyofEuropeanformsreceivedimpetus fromtheresearchofCecilSharpinEnglandearlyinthe twentiethcentury,butasurveyofstudiesmadeintheSoviet Unionshowsmaterialsdatingbackto1848(cfo,Kurath1960)0 ConcentratedstudiesoforalliteraturewerebeguninGermany bytheGrimmbrothersearlyinthenineteenthcentury,andthe word"folklore"wascoinedbyWilliamJohnThomsin1846 (Emrich1946)0Theearliestpublicationsinethnomusicology assuch,datefrom1882withTheodoreBaker'sdoctoraldissertationattheUniversityofLeipzig,OntheMusicoftheNorth AmericanSavages;andthestudyofthevisualartsamong peoplesotherthanourselvesbegantoreceivesignificantimpetus inthedecadessurroundingtheadventofthetwentiethcentury.
